From time to time, our clients need to work in remote locations. Being able to access documents saved on company servers whilst away from the office is extremely valuable and this formed the basis of a recent Labs project.
Aim: To find an easy way for clients to connect to their office from a remote location
Method: To set up and test the Meraki Z1 in different environments
Approach: The Meraki Z1 device creates a VPN connection to either a Firewall or server, allowing wired and wireless connections back to the office.

The device has four Ethernet ports and a USB port. The Ethernet ports allow four wired devices to be connected, along with more devices connected via Wi-Fi (2.4Ghz or 5Ghz).
The Meraki Z1 performs better with an Internet connection through a wired Ethernet connection, but also has the capability to failover to a backup 3G/4G dongle.
With a detailed and informative web dashboard, you can make any configuration changes remotely and also update the device automatically via the Meraki Cloud to provide new features and security updates.
The ideal location for using the Meraki Z1 device is for instance in a hotel room when travelling for business. You simply plug the device into an Ethernet port, create a secure Wi-Fi connection back to your office and allow all of your devices to connect. You can do this without the risk of someone trying to hijack your sessions or sniff the packets going through the network.
Overall, the Meraki Z1 is a great product to easily and securely connect to your office whilst working from a remote location.
